Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  Must my child have a certain GPA to enter the MYP program?

A. No.  All students are welcome.

Q.  What are the criteria (FCAT, Grades) required for entry into the MYP at Central?

A.  The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is designed to meet the needs of all students; thus, there are no required minimal levels for FCAT scores or course grades for MYP participation.  By offering a whole-school Middle Years Programme, Central exemplifies the IB belief that all students profit from learning that connects academic knowledge with real-world problem solving.  Likewise, Central’s whole school MYP exemplifies the IB belief that all students profit when learning addresses not only academic needs but also social, emotional, and physical needs to ensure the harmonious development of knowledge, understanding, attitude, and skills.

As a member of the IB-MYP at Central, every student has the opportunity to explore an educational path that teaches each young person how to become a lifelong learner able to respond to the lifelong challenges of building a better world locally, nationally, and globally.  Similarly, as an incoming IB-MYP student at Central Middle School, every young person (starry-eyed with dreams of a bright future) reaps the benefit of careful placement (based on attentive review of elementary educational experiences and the IB-MYP essay) with dedicated teachers committed to providing the best possible learning environment

 Q.  How does the MYP curriculum differ from the standard 7th or 8th grade curriculum?

A.  The Sunshine State Standards are the same; however, the approach to teaching is different. The MYP teachers emphasize links among the subjects as well as bridges between the classroom and the world beyond.

Q.  Will the MYP teachers balance the load of homework my child will bring home?

A. MYP teachers meet regularly to discuss student activities including homework and exams.

 Q.  If my children are  part of the MYP program at Central, are they guaranteed to be placed into the IB Diploma Program at Melbourne High School or at another high school?

A.  No. The MYP prepares students to choose from a variety of programs available to them at the high school level throughout the district.  Entry into those programs is determined by the high school.

 Q.  Is it an MYP requirement to make my child volunteer or do community service?

A.  No.  Your student will be examining what it means to enter the community and cultivate the desire to make the community a better place for all.

Q.  Can students receive high school credit for math and Spanish classes?

A.  Yes. Guidelines are available in our Guidance department.

Q.  If I live out of area for Melbourne High School, can my children continue the IBO educational experience?
